that's what she said

check out my new article on prettyqueer—it’s all about how trans guys should really remember to give all the credit to the rad trans women we learned everything from when we talk about transmisogyny and how basically folx should just listen to trans women in the first place

remember how it was a thing in the late 1990s to early 2000s that people thought of trans guys as underrepresented in terms of literature about trans folks and so white trans guy college students who started transitioning around that time started talking about themselves in these really self-indulgent ways in academic settings all the time and people thought they were totally brilliant and edgy and groundbreaking even though they were saying the same shit trans women said before them and mostly appropriating violence against trans women of color and claiming it as their own?  and everyone thought it was so radical and it became the cool thing to be a douchey white trans guy college student who wrote lengthy academic articles based on personal experience or do annoying spoken word poetry and calling it “gender theory” or something and lots of trans guys started doing this cause it got them laid?

and then remember how suddenly, trans guys were definitely not underrepresented but everyone still ate up everything trans guys said, even when it was usually the same stuff someone else said way better before them?

and you know how if you come across something written back right before that happened and it says how trans guys are never written about, you have to kinda grit your teeth and think, okay, maybe that was true when this was written, i have to at least bare with the dated language and now messed up ideas to see what this person has to say?

but then, you know how you sometimes come across stuff that was written like a year ago where the author still writes this preface about how they wanted to write about trans guys because no one ever writes about trans guys when writing about trans folks and you have to really question whether the author has ever spent any time in trans communities?

and then you know how you then sort of inadvertently come to a mindset that you really can’t take any article about trans guys seriously unless it’s ramming into trans guys for being annoying and kind of sucking and needing to check our privilege and douchebaggery?

Pretty Queer: For the Love of Transmisandry

They posted my article!

prettyqueer:

Let me paint a picture you may have seen before. A college campus nearby is having some sort of trans event. Let’s say it’s Trans Day of Remembrance. Everyone is crowded around a stage and a white trans man steps up to the mic and introduces “our own awesome trans man poet and activist whatever,…

to try and piss people off i guess

it’s probably messed up that when i hear someone use the term “transmisandry,” i think, “yes!”  it’s not even that i hate trans guys, i love myself and i love a lot of other trans guys.  but it’s that i get really irritated with anyone who talks about trans guys in this weird place like we can do no wrong and are all enlightened and stuff when a lot of trans guys are misogynist douchey dude/bros.

so, like, if a trans person were to talk about transmisogyny in the trans community, my ears would perk up and i would be all, “fuck that, i hate that too,” but upon hearing the term, “transmisandry” used by a trans person, i think, “hell yeah, that’s what i am” and i embrace it.

not trying to be self-hating or anything, just, like, sayin, i wish people talked about this more and i get excited when they do.
